Based in Kyoto, we are an architectural design consultancy with traditional Japanese carpentry expertise, associated with a fine wood business 銘木店 in Gifu, Japan. We have design/construction experience in New York, San Francisco, Japan and Hong Kong. Services that we offer:
- application of traditional Japanese carpentry techniques in traditional or modern design 日本の茶室建築・空間の設計.
- application of the Japanese spatial planning "ma 間", in relation to human perception of different spaces, functional needs and as construction units in co-ordinating production and design.
- use of natural colors and materials 和の素材と色 (e.g. wood, paper, stones etc.) For example, we admire Noguchi's cominbation between washi 和紙 and stone sculptural shape in creating the akari lamps.
- meeting the challenge of "communication with nature" 自然との対話 --openness and closeness, location and timing.
All in all, since wood that would fit for construciton takes at least 60 years to grow, traditional Japanese wisdom suggests one should think about designing a building for at least a 60-year lifespan to make the construction environmentally sound.
